When we experience a headache, our head and face tend to feel tight, we lose our ability to concentrate, we have more difficulty with processing emotions and making decisions. In some cases headaches become so severe we are unable to do work and become sensitive to light and sound. While chiropractors are more often sought out for back pain, the American Chiropractic Association (ACA) reported that approximately 14% of patients seek care for headache (1).
Chiropractic treatment is a holistic alternative to medical doctors and over-the-counter (OTC) medications. Here are some common types of headaches and how Chiropractic care can help.
Migraines affect about 6 million people in the UK every year and are more common in women. The sensation of a migraine is very intense throbbing often accompanied by sensitivity to light and sound and in some cases nausea. Migraines can last anywhere from a few hours up to a few days. These types of headaches are often genetic and can occur throughout a person’s life. When a migraine comes on, the blood vessels in the brain constrict and dilate. This raises the blood pressure in the head and can make some people experience an aura.
These are the most common type of headaches that are responsible for 75% of all people who report suffering from a headache. Tension headaches are a lasting sense of dullness, usually felt most predominantly behind the eyes. These headaches can start slow but build up and last for days. Tension headaches are often associated with stress and bad posture. In severe cases, the pain may last for months.
This type of headache is often much shorter in duration though the pain can be more severe. Cluster headaches are often felt on one side of the head more predominantly than the other, and usually behind the eyes. Cluster headaches are more common in men. A cluster headache is much more likely to come on at night and occur around four times over the span of a few days. Cluster headaches typically do not happen more than once a year. Cluster headaches occur when the blood vessels of the brain dilate, which can create an increased sense of pressure in the head.
If you are frequently experiencing headaches, we encourage you to seek Chiropractic care. At the Optimal Chiropractic & Wellness Centre, we prioritise spinal alignment as much of our health relies on how we carry ourselves.
When our spine is misaligned, our nervous system functions become compromised which may negatively affect our organ functions and overall health. Additionally, we offer digital analysis with our software that can help pinpoint the area triggered so we may better treat you.
Chiropractors work to ensure you have proper alignment of the spine, so the nervous system can function and send signals up the spine, to our brain, and through the body
A chiropractic adjustment helps to relieve the pressure of the upper cervical joints
By adjusting the alignment of your spine, the signal function is improved to the nervous system
You do not have to suffer through life with headaches, when you come to the Optimal Chiropractic & Wellness Centre, you are in good hands. Whether you are new to Chiropractic care or have been before, we are happy to answer any questions you have about our services.
